HIPLIFE MUSICIAN GURU TO BECOME A PROPHET

The popular Ghanaian musician-Guru who brought us Lapaz Toyota, Alkayida and other hit songs have mentioned on a serious note that, he may soon become a prophet by honoring God’s call.

Making a donation in Kumasi at Baba Yara Sports Stadium over the weekend, Guru is reported by The Popular Newspaper as saying;

“I see and hear so many calls from a strange voice speaking to me a number of times entreating me to come out but I have not paid ears to it. Most at times I feel scared to come out to tell the world what the voice instructs me to say. It is time I blow everything the voice echoes through me because whatever I am told by the voice always comes to pass”.

If Guru proceeds to become a man of God has mentioned, he will not the first Ghanaian musician to have turned to such a ministry as we already have Evangelist Lord Kenya and Pastor Ofori Amponsah championing the God cause.

LADIES ABANDON THEIR BOYFRIENDS TO HOLD ME - ACTOR

Nollywood actor, Charles Awurum must have a strong fan base with the ladies more than the males. In a recent interview when he was asked the craziest thing a fan has done to him, he said ladies grab him when they see him in public.

"I am used to their reactions. Sometimes they see me and shout Jesus! Some ladies will abandon their boyfriends to hold me. Even married women are not exempted; they often grab me in public, it happens most of the time so it can't be tagged at the craziest" he said

The actor who was actually a painter before he went into acting added that desperate actresses pay to get roles in a movie, whether they know how to act or not, some pay over 300,000 to feature in a movie.

PAYING BACK WITH BAD, ADDS NO VALUE TO YOUR LIFE ...ACTOR

Nollywood actor, Chinedu Ikedieze, has taken his time out to advice fans on how to tolerate one another no matter the situation surrounding them.

The actor explained that some people are just out there to bring others down but if one makes the mistake of hurting them in return, it makes no meaning.

Chinedu better known as Aki, urged fans to neglect pride and try to apologise at every given situation which serves as a sign of maturity and not giving up.

“Actions speak louder than words. We can apologize over and over, but if our actions don't change, the words become meaningless.”

“The true mark of maturity is when somebody hurts you and you try to understand their situation instead of trying to hurt them back.”

“Sometimes you have to shut up, swallow your pride, & accept that you're wrong, it's not giving up, it's called growing up,” he posted.

WE ARE JUST FRIENDS - ACTRESS

The multi-talented and light-skinned actress, Matilda Asare has rebuffed rumours circulating in the country that she is dating Osita Iheme, a Nollywood ace actor popularly known in showbiz as Pawpaw. In an interview with The Popular, said she went on a trip to America but rather returned to hear strange rumour.

According to Matilda, she recently went to Nigeria on personal businesses but not to visit her" supposed boyfriend” as she is being tagged with. To her, Pawpaw and herself are professionals and understand their career, adding she has been on set with the actor several times. She explained she met the petit actor twice in Ghana for the shooting of Kumawood movies Boys Abr3 and For Girls respectively.

However she conceded the fact that she likes Pawpaw as a friend and a colleague and nothing more. She told The Popular that as to where those funny rumours got to the media is still a puzzle she is yet to find an answer to. "This is not the first time I'm facing such issues, it is part of my occupational hazards “so I'm cool with it” .She is therefore asking the media to ignore such stories about the story because they are all orchestrated lies and there is no truth in them.

Ghanaian actresses falling for the Nollywood actors have been on the ascendency in recent times. Within a spate of about three years, the industry has witnessed a failed relationship between Yvonne Nelson and Iyanya, and an on and off episode from Nadia Buari and Jim Ike.

Osita Iheme known in showbiz as Pawpaw is yet to marry after years of his colleague actor brother Aki tied the knot some years ago.

KAFUI DANKU TAKES ON HER HATERS

Movie producer and actress, Kafui Danku, on Friday lambasted people she said are publishing fake movie arts of a work she apparently produced.

The actress said an artwork of a movie was sent to her and “has been photo-shopped” in a way that does not flatter her image and reputation.”

Taking to her facebook page to address the matter, she said it was the handiwork of people who are after her.

“It’s really sad how people want you down so badly that they spend all their time devising means of ruining your reputation,” she wrote.

According to her, the poster which is meant to advertise a movie titled ‘Destined’ came across to her as a joke when she first saw it.

“Initially, I laughed about it and thought it was all one big joke and then I woke up this morning with all kinds of messages on my phone…Well, I just want to let my fans who don’t know me personally that, I’ve never shot any movie called ‘Destined’.”

“I’ve also not worked with those other artists on the poster. I’m sure someone is just trying to distract me, knowing that we’re seriously working hard at producing another fantastic movie.”

Kafui Danku is currently on set producing a new movie titled “Happy Deathday”, and says all her movies are of high quality and the said movie, ‘Destined’, can never be compared with any of her works.

“…our genuine fans, I want to let u know that I’m not distracted at all. We’re still shooting HAPPY DEATHDAY and this won’t stop us. If you follow the movies I feature in, you can tell that the poster of ‘Destined’ is fake and definitely not my kind of movie.”

Happy Deathday features Nana Ama Mcbrown, Alexe Kubo, James Gardner Elikem Kumordzie the tailor and Kafui Danku herself.

FANS ARRESTED IN KUMASI FOR TAUNTING ASAMOAH GYAN OVER CASTRO'S DISAPPEARANCE

Two football fans were arrested at the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Wednesday morning when they taunted Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan over musician Castro’s disappearance at the Black Stars training session.

The police swooped to arrest the two fans to prevent them from being beaten up by some supporters who were angry over the comments over the loud comments directed at the Black Stars captain.

The two 20-year-olds students of the Koforidua Polytechnic started shouting ‘Asamoah Gyan – where is Castro’ directing that at the UAE-based attacker as the Black Stars arrived for training on Wednesday morning.

Angry at what many of the fans thought were insensitive comments from Isaac Owusu and Bright Nistowel, the supporters turned on the duo threatening to beat them up.

The police at the stadium quickly swooped to arrest the duo to prevent them from being beaten up by the angry crowd who were gathering around them.

Some fans hooted at the two students as they were marched by the police for detention and further investigations.

While the police were marching them away the two lads were seen trading accusations over who mouthed the provocative words towards Asamoah Gyan in the stands.

Castro, a famous music icon in Ghana, disappeared and feared dead in July while on holidays at the Ada resort with his close friend Gyan.

I WAS SACKED FROM MY CHURCH - FUNNY FACE

Ghanaian comedian, Benson Nana Yaw Oduro Boateng, better known as 'Funny Face' has reminisced his days as a prayer warrior at Living Streams church.

The comedian told 'News-one' "I was a prayer warrior at Living Streams but they sacked me and said when I pray, people laugh and lose concentration. Then I joined the choir and they also sacked me from the choir, complaining that when I sing and when I dance, they laugh too much".

Funny Face let in 'News-One' into his residence at Millennium City Estate, Kasoa in the outskirts of Accra where his compound was littered with bullet cartridges fired frequently in the night to warn thieves.

The award-winning actor was sharing some of his experiences and thoughts on the comedy industry in Ghana.

"GOSPEL SINGERS MUST NOT FOCUS ON ENTERTAINMENT"

The Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Kwaku Asante, Outgoing Presiding Bishop of Methodist Church, Ghana, has said Church Choirs and gospel musicians should win souls for Christ with their songs instead of providing mere entertainment.

“There is the need for you to realize that your primary duty in singing is not for entertainment so let what you sing expose your listeners to the wide range of biblical image and story, backed by the power that spirit imparts for the holistic redemption of our faith communities,” he said.

He was speaking at the official opening of the 15th Biennial National Delegates Conference of the Association of Methodist Church Choirs, Ghana (GHAMECC) at Cape Coast, Most Rev. Asante also challenged hymn and song composers to write songs that built faith and trust in God.

Most Rev. Asante said singing, like preaching, was a powerful tool, which imparted the word of God to Christians and non-believers for effective Christian formation and growth.

The five-day conference, which also marks the 40th Anniversary of the Association, is on the theme, “witnessing to Christ; singing for effective Christian formation." It is being attended by more than 2,000 delegates from Methodist Churches nationwide.

The formation of Methodist Church choirs began many years before 1974, but it was in April of the year that the Association was established by a group of dedicated choristers.

The objective was to bring all Methodist Choirs on a common platform for the discussion and prosecution of issues of common interest. It was also to bring uniformity, correctness in singing, among others.

Most Rev. Asante said the early Methodists, led by John and Charles Wesley, were identified as people of God through singing; consequently, the lyrical heritage of Methodism was partly grounded on the recognition of congregational singing as a potent means of teaching faith.

He said Methodist choristers were at the forefront of the Church’s discipleship process, teaching and nurturing of faith through the medium of music and, therefore, urged them to prepare themselves intentionally as a fitting instrument.

The Central Regional Minster, Mr. Aquinas Tawiah, said the failure of choristers to propagate the gospel had dire consequences and urged them to work hard to eschew negative tendencies.

Mr Quansah commended the Methodist Church for its contribution towards the development of education, health, and other areas.

Prof. Yaw Sekyi-Baidoo, National Chairman of GHAMECC, paid glowing tributes to the founding members and all those who had contributed to the welfare of the association since its establishment.

He said challenges facing the association included the unavailability of musicians, especially organists, to help choirs in rural areas, lack of budgetary support for implementation of commendable suggestions and the depletion of members due to old age.

He, therefore, and appealed for support to solve the problems.

Prof. Sekyi-Baidoo announced that the association planned to publish a new hymnbook of Ghanaian composers to meet the Ghanaian local taste and also step up dialogues on the placement, formation, training and management of junior choirs to replenish the senior choir.

MUSICIANS NOT HAPPY WITH GHAMRO BOARD

A number of Ghanaian musicians have thrown their weight behind the call for the right structures to be put in place to aid Ghanaian musicians who only make money out of their intellectual properties through performances.

They emphasized that the industry do not only need fresh captains to manage the affairs of the Ghana Music Right Organisation (GHAMRO), a collective society, but people with required competence and commitment to push for vast improvement in the music and the creative industry.

The musicians in separate interviews with BEATWAVES after a press conference held by GHAMRO interim board at the Oak Plaza in Accra last Thursday stressed that the music industry in Ghana has not witnessed massive enhancement due to the absence of competent leadership to manage the affairs at GHAMRO.

The press conference organised by the new interim board of GHAMRO to announce the strategies the board intends to use in ensuring transparency with the affairs of the organisation.

The new GHAMRO board during the press conference disclosed that as part of building transparency, it would publish its financial statements monthly in the dailies at the office notice board and also a copy sent to Attorney General’s office and also hold stakeholders meeting in October.

The board, made up made up of Kwame Nsia Apau popularly known as Okyeame Kwame, Nana Aboagye Dacosta, Enock Agyapong, Dorothy Habadah, a representative from Copy Rights Office, and Kow Sessah Acquaye, a representative from the Attorney General’s Department, again disclosed that since it took office barely two months, it has been able to receive an amount of GH¢25,000 and saved in a Guaranty Trust bank account.

Soon after the press conference, one of the seasoned music producers and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PAPCAD Ghana Limited, Kwesi Agyapong, in an interview called on all the stakeholders in the music industry in Ghana to reject the representation of the new interim board set up some weeks ago to steer the affairs of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) for the next six months.

He said a large number of music stakeholders and the music producers associations are unhappy with the representation of the interim board, adding that the current board does not involve the stakeholders in the decision-making process of GHAMRO.

Mr Agyapong added that all stakeholders should come together and fight for their rights because the industry does not belong to only a handful of people.

The music producer with over 20 albums to his credit rubbished the press conference describing it as unnecessary and a waste of time. He also accused the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kuffour, aka Obour, of using mafia tactics to destroy GHAMRO.

Some members of the Music Council of Ghana (MCG) led by its Vice President, Akosua Agyepong, also condemned the GHAMRO’s interim board for not performing to the satisfaction of all the stakeholders.

“We were thinking that the interim board was going to tells us something good that will be beneficial to all the stakeholders only to dust into the eyes of the people,” they said.

The press conference was attended by a large number of musicians like Nana Ampadu, Kojo Antwi, Ekow Mikah, Randy Nunoo, Akosua Agyapong, Ben Brako, among others.

“I LOVE KWABENA KWABENA’S MUSIC”

On August 23, 2014 in London, gospel musician Sonnie Badu danced to 'Adult Music' by Highlife artiste Kwabena Kwabena during his wedding ceremony with Ann-Marie.

The issue of Sonnie Badu dancing to secular music became one of the most talked about issues in the country during the week.

Whilst others rebuked the “Baaba” singer for his act, others stood behind him arguing that there is nothing wrong with the newly married man and his wife dancing to the song. Now we know why Sonnie Badu didn’t dance to any other music aside Kwabena Kwabena’s 'Adult Music'.

Before Sonnie Badu tied the knot on that faithful Saturday, he had told KOD on his TV show, 'Hangout with KOD' that he loves Kwabena Kwabena’s songs because they talk about love.

Not only did he mention Kwabena Kwabena as the secular artiste he loves listening to, but he also named Dan “Iron Boy” Amakye Dede and Afro-pop,Highlife and reggae artiste Kojo Antwi.

This answer was given when KOD asked him if he listens to Ghanaian music, read below:

Those who talk about sex and I want to do that, they are not good for the society. It doesn’t speak well, but those who talk about love, I think there is nothing wrong with it. I listen to Kojo Antwi and Amakye Dede.

I learn from them, when they are on stage, the way they perform. I call them uncle because they have experiences we don’t know.

So it’s the lyrical content that differentiate between the two, gospel music and secular.

‘KOFI SARPONG IS ONE OF THE CELEBRATED GOSPEL ARTISTES IN GHANA’

Police officer and gospel musician, DSP Kofi Sarpong, has been highly eulogized for his musical prowess and ingenuity.

“Kofi Sarpong has consistently maintained his reputation as one of the most celebrated gospel musicians in Ghana and beyond,” noted the award-winning chief executive of Media Excel Productions, Ernest Kwasi Ennin.

Mr. Ennin, who has played a very important role in the development of Ghanaian music and artiste management, has disclosed that he has undertaken a number of projects and events to help promote the local gospel music industry.

Kwasi Ernest, who has contributed significantly to the success of some Ghanaian gospel musicians such as Piesie Esther, Joyce Blessing, Becca, DSP Kofi Sarpong, among others, disclosed that his outfit is currently holding a series of meetings with certain investors who have shown interest in supporting the growth of the Ghanaian gospel music industry.

He told BEATWAVES in a chat that he wanted to bring change to the gospel music business, to enable gospel musicians earn what is due them, and also get an endorsement as corporate ambassadors and brands.

Based on his determination to move the gospel music industry to another level, Ernest has already negotiated with certain distributors in some African countries to market and distribute Ghanaian musical works in those countries.

He further disclosed that all the artistes on his label – Joyce Blessing, Kofi Sarpong, Rose Adjei, among others - were working tirelessly to meet the challenges ahead them.

According to him, his outfit was working on an impending gospel musical concert for Kofi Sarpong to celebrate his achievement in the music industry as well as raise funds to support his foundation.

He added that the concert would also be used to launch Sarpong’s much-awaited third album.

Kofi’s dream had always been to promote Christ through music, and his concert is indeed in response to the demand from his numerous fans who have been witnessing his stage performances so many times.

#THROWBACK (SEPT. 2, 2002): CRENTSIL, SIDIKU APOLOGIZE FOR USING VULGAR LANGUAGES

Two veteran Highlife musicians, A.B. Crentsil and Sidiku Buari have apologized for using vulgar lyrics in their hit songs. The two are top officials of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), which recently announced a ban on songs that contain vulgar lyrics.

A.B. Crentsil and Sidiku Buari were prolific songsters in the 1970s and early 1980’s. They both possess the skill to inject witty expressions in their songs that got their fans addicted to their kind of music.

But the two musical nuggets strayed a little from the norm when they both released hit songs that contained vulgar language; A.B Crentsil’s hit song, 'Moses', contains sexually explicit language that draws analogy from the biblical exodus of Moses and the Jews from Egypt to Canaan through the red sea.

Sidiku Buari’s track, 'Feed my body' on his Disco Soccer album, suggests images of vulgarism with the lyrics including, “Do it, push it, forward, backwards, sideways, any way you want it." He sung in the song released in 1979 with the photograph of bare-chested woman on the cover of the LP.

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation refused to play the song because it was too vulgar.

The two leading musicians, who are influential members of MUSIGA apologized for the lyrics they used in their songs. This follows recent criticism against songs like Borax and Daddy Lumba’s ‘Asee Ho’ ( Down There), even from members of MUSIGA.

Sidiku Buari told JOY FM that he used vulgar lyrics because of the youthful exuberance and commercial interest as “most of my songs at the time were produced in America and at the time we were being childish. The producers wanted commercial music to make money but now we don’t want the younger musicians to make the same mistakes we made those days.”

A. B. Crentsil on his part said he now sees the release of the song, ‘Moses’, as one of the biggest mistakes he ever made in his life, “there is a proverb that once in a man’s life, man causes a blunder and I think this is one big mistake I made and I regret so much and if it was possible to retrieve retrieve all the CDs and cassettes of that song, i will”.

Meanwhile, in January 2014, the ace musician, A.B. Crentsil, said he has not regretted making the song ‘Moses’ which generated so much controversy in the country.

“If you read about Moses and the exodus of the children of Israel from the land of Egypt, you’ll know the song has a biblical base, he said, smiling. I was only creative, using the bible story for a song,” he told Times Weekend in an interview.

A.B. said he always felt touched whenever he heard politicians and other notable people singing the song, “It shows it's still a great song.”

SUNNY FM BANS PLAY OF LOCAL SONGS

One of the popular radio stations in the capital, the Christian-Oriented station, Sunny 88.9FM has issued a directive for its presenters and other disc jockeys at the station to stop the play of local gospel songs.

Management of the station is said to have arrived by the decision due to concerns raised by key stakeholders of the stations as well as feedback from a poll that was organized by the station to solicit the views of the avid listeners of the station on the direction the station is charting.

In the said directive, the station has ordered that all local songs, particularly songs in the local dialects from Ghana and some other countries should not be given any air time on the station.

A source close to the station stated that, one of the reasons assigned for the directive is that; the core listeners of the station raised red flags of not making sense out of the local songs that were played and did not appreciate them at all.

Presenters of the station, who, over the few years have cultivated the habit of promoting Ghanaian gospel artistes and their local songs on the station – are not too excited over the decision by Management.

One of the presenters was suspended from the station for playing a local tune after the issuance of the directive from Management.

However, the same directive also states that foreign songs produced by local acts can be played, and local songs can only be played on paid airtime but not on any programme(s) of the station.

Speaking to the programme Director of the station, Mr. Kojo Oppong Adjei, he confirmed the directive issued by Management.

He explained; “It is a golden rule which was set by the CEO and Management, and the reason is that, we have lots of radio stations, and the competition is very tight, so, for us to look outstanding, we have to do something different.”

He also stated that the ban does not apply on weekends; “If the song is 50% local and 50% foreign lyrics, we will play it,” he added.

ACTRESS MARTHA ANKOMAH IS FACE OF VITA MILK VIORA

Actress Martha Ankomah has been made face of Vita Milk’s new product, Viora; officials have said. The announcement comes on the back of her shooting of the commercial for the product earlier this year in Thailand.

Viora, a new, strawberry and soya-based milk that offers a uniquely refreshing feel, will be launched onto the Ghanaian market soon, and Martha is expected to lead several promotional efforts planned for the outdooring.

One of Ghana’s most respected actors, the decision to settle on her was informed by her alluring personality, which has over the years seen her become a role model for many young people.

Becoming the face of Viora goes further to enhance her public image and that of the brand.

A young, successful known face, she is to many, one of few Ghanaian actresses with an enviable acting career that is admirable across several titles.

Viora will be launch in the coming weeks, in an event expected to draw some of the finest celebrity heads in Ghana, as well as the corporate community.

FENNEC’S WIFE REJECTS MONEY FROM HIS FAMILY

It is sad that after the gruesome murder of industry stalwart, Fennec Okyere, observers and loved ones are yet to hear any good news concerning the once affable, ebullient and blunt personality.

The Ghana Police are yet to find any meaningful leads on the murder case, the family of the deceased are still waiting to get closure on the matter, industry players are in limbo over the case.

And the wife and kid are still hurting over the loss of their breadwinner and most unfortunately, there’s still bad blood between his family and the wife.

Information reaching 'Razz' newspaper indicates that at the time Fennec would have celebrated his 31st Birthday; the family made a gesture by presenting a cheque of an undisclosed amount of money to the bereaved wife, Amarkie.

Amarkie is said to have rejected the gesture from the family, returning the cheque to the family, and seemingly not wanting anything to do with the family.

Her reaction is quite understandable considering the infamous decision of the family to openly reject her as the wife of Fennec, ostracizing her from the funeral arrangements, barring her from attending the funeral and questioning her fidelity in the media.

Speaking to an Uncle of Fennec, he confirmed that the family made that gesture of presenting the money to Amarkie, and it was rejected.

“We recognize that we have a grandson, and it is our responsibility to take care of the kid. When Fennec was alive, he took good care of the kid, and we wish to do same. We simply can’t forget the welfare of the kid,” he said.

He also explained that there is no major issue between Amarkie and the families as the two parties are working feverishly to resolve whatever differences exist between them.

“It is our wish that issues to do with Fennec and his family is not discussed in the media. We want his name to rest,” he pleaded.

On the reasons assigned by Amarkie for the rejection of the money, he explained: “I hear it is her wish that the two families sit down to talk on certain issues before such gestures can take place and indeed, the two families will meet and resolve issues.”

"EAZZY REJECTED EDDIE WATSON KISS"

Female songstress, Eazzy, born Mildred Ashong, is reported to have turned down a kiss from handsome Ghanaian actor, Eddie Watson, who most female singles in the movie industry won’t hesitate to kiss.

The incident took place while both personalities with large following were filming on the set of Yvonne Nelson’s Single, Married & Complicated movie.

Eazzy is playing Eddie’s love interest in the new movie, which will hit the big screens this week.

Yvonne Nelson made the revelation about the Eddie and Eazzy saga when she appeared on Yfm’s Saturday morning programme with Jay Foley and Caleb Giovani.

“Eazzy refused to kiss Eddie. She said Yvonne I can’t do it,” Yvonne said and didn’t give reasons why she turned down the kiss.

Eddie, who recently got married to the love of his life, Noami, is not noted for wanting to kiss other guys’ mistresses.

He has however kissed a number of big names in the movie industry, including Yvonne Nelson, for the sake of movie making. But the sexy Eazzy had refused to be his next victim.

Meanwhile, all roads will lead to the Silverbird Cinemas in Accra for the movie’s premieres on Friday, September 5.

Single, Married & Complicated is a sequel to the 2012 hit movie, ‘Single & Married’ by Yvonne Nelson.

It continues the story of three recently married female friends, all with challenges within their marriages, as they embarked on a journey to discover what it takes to make a marriage succeed.

It stars both Nigerian and Ghanaian actors including Chris Attoh, Tana Adelana, Eddie Watson, Anita Erksine, Alexx Ekubo, John Dumelo and James Gardiner.

Ghanaian female musician Eazzy, TV presenter Berla Mundi, Nigerian comedian Hogan and a host of other new faces also feature in the movie.

NANA AMA MCBROWN ANGRY AT KUMAWOOD FILMMAKERS

Award winning Ghanaian actresses, Nana Ama McBrown, has condemned some Kumasi filmmakers who always take advantage of controversial issues in our society to produce movies.

Using controversial cases, orchestrations and stories to make movies has finally become the norm in our movie industry – especially amongst filmmakers in Kumasi otherwise known as Kumawood or the Twi-speaking movie industry.

Nana Ama McBrown, who is almost an indispensable force in Kumawood, told Razz Newspaper; “I am not against filmmakers shooting movies on social issues, but that does not mean they should wait for something to happen before they take advance to shoot movies. It’s silly!”

“Even if you want to use the situation to shoot a movie, it should not be a direct replica of the original or true situation. For instance, look at this Castro and Janet case, both have not been found so why should one shoot a movie with it a time their families are still mourning?” she queried.

She lamented on other incidents: “The two have not been found so why shoot a movie with it? There is also one called ‘Megyemeba’; clearly, the movie is about a lady who lost her child at the Komfo Anokye hospital.

Because the issue became popular, and the lady was demanding for her child, they shot that movie ‘Megyemeba.’

She further explained: “I don’t have any problem with our filmmakers using controversial cases to shoot a movie once it teaches some moral lessons. However, that is not the situation. So to me, I don’t condone that practice in our industry! I wish to move on; they stop.

The actress, whom Razz Newspaper learnt had been casted for a movie scripted around the mysterious Castro and Janet tragedy and is supposed to play the role of Janet Bandu, furiously spit on such acting offer that may come her way.

“Play what? Janet what? No one has contacted me! I will not take any role like that from any filmmaker! No one has called me to ask me even to play such a role. It is silly!

Silly! Do you see me in such movies? I want that movie producer to approach me, and he wills hear what I will tell him. I think the filmmakers want to use me to become popular but look, Ghanaians are becoming discerning.

The time will come when the good reputation of production houses, scriptwriters and directors are what people will look out for before they buy movies," she declared.

She admitted, “A time will come when people will not buy movies simply because Nana Ama is in it but who directed it or who scripted the story based on their works over the years.”

FIPAG ADMITS PIRACY IS A PROBLEM

President of the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), Steve Asare Hackman has admitted that the production and sale of pirated movies are affecting the movie industry.

Though FIPAG has a taskforce responsible for fighting the act that is reported to be on the rise, Mr Hackman told NEWS-ONE that piracy is broader than what people think.

“We have an anti-piracy taskforce who occasional go round to arrest those who deal in the pirated Ghanaian movies. The issue with piracy is that it cannot be eradicated, but you can only minimise it.

Whiles our producers are selling their CDs for let’s say GH¢5 or GH¢7, these pirates will be selling the same movie on DVD at a cheaper price, and with the current economic situation, people will prefer to buy the pirated one to the original ones,” he stated.

When the paper interacted with some Ghanaian movie producers, they noted that sales of movies had gone down because most people are only interested in pirating the movies rather than buying the original ones.

But the FIPAG boss explained that the association’s anti-piracy taskforce was working tirelessly to curb the issue.

According to him the taskforce, who works in collaboration with the police and FIPAG executives, is divided into two; one for the southern sector—who take care of Greater Accra, Western, Eastern and Volta Regions; and another for the northern sector—responsible for Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and the Northern Regions.

“In recent times, when these producers talk about piracy, it is not only about people remaking the CDs or DVDs for sale, but some people are now uploading the pirated movies onto the internet whiles others are distributing them on pen drives.

Piracy is broader than what people look at. As it stands now, the sales of our movies on CDs and DVDs are going down, so we at FIPAG are looking at another market like the internet. We are trying to create our internet market so we can also sell our movies there as well,” he added.

Over the years, piracy has been considered internationally as a crime that is punishable by law.

THE GOD GURU, SARKODIE, OTHERS ARE WORSHIPPING IS FALSE - GOSPEL ARTISTE

The recent trend which most Ghanaian songs by popular acts is to just take the name of God and or call God in a different language such as Nyame, Baba, Mawu etc and drop a danceable beat to it and it becomes a gospel song which is contrary to Christian norms says Ghanaian urban gospel artist Calvin Bill.

According to the gospel rapper/singer Calvin Bill, songs like Sarkodie's 'Adonai', Bisa Kdei s 'Baba', Guru's unorthodox 'Amen', 'Mpaebo', 'Bonsam Ani', cannot be labelled gospel songs because it doesn’t praise the Christian God in any way.

“In every religion there is a belief of a supreme God or Baba and even the demons believe in a God." These are some of the words urban gospel artist Calvin Bill said when he was interviewed by the JC Cafe, a Ghanaian gospel group whose aim is to take the real Gospel to the streets.

So what then is a gospel song?

The meaning of gospel is good news about the life of Christ and his reason of dying for mankind so a gospel song is a ministration about Jesus Christ and not just simply calling Gods name in songs.

So these secular artists end up misleading and deceiving the youth in believing they are Godly people when they’re just wolves in sheep skin.

"NO STOPPING FOR ME", GURU

Rapper, Guru has revealed there is no stopping him because he has arrived due to his consistency of releasing hit songs since he emerged on the music five years ago.

After he featured on Obrafour’s Kasiebo five years ago, Guru has released a number of singles that have enjoyed massive airplay. They include 'Bonsam Ani', 'Lapaz Toyota', 'Akonta Fried Rice' and 'Alkayida'.

This, according to Guru when he spoke with Showbiz last Saturday is proof to Ghanaians that indeed he has come to stay.

“I say I have arrived because I am always on top of my game, and I know what my fans want. I do my homework well hence the reason my songs are always hits. No one can stop me from what I love so far as I am alive.

“Ever since I came onto the music scene five years ago, I have been consistent in the game and all I want to tell my fans is that they should expect more from me," he said.

And to buttress his point, Guru has again added to his repertoire. He released a new single Mpaebo off his up- coming album two weeks ago.

On the track that Guru dedicates to a friend, he spells out the challenges his pal is going through and tells him never to give up hope. He goes on to talk about the financial challenges of his friend and why he is not able to marry despite the good women who come his way.

According to Guru, “although I made the song for my friend, it also goes to anyone who is going through similar challenges not to give up hope. When you are focused and know what you are about, the good Lord showers His blessings on you” he said.

Although Mpaebo will appeal to his fans, the beat of the song produced by Beat Monsta is no different from Guru’s previous singles 'Alkayida' and 'Nkwadaa'.

There is no doubt the song could have sounded better if he had used a different beat.

SHATTA WALE WINS AFRICAN ARTISTE OF THE YEAR

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jnr., popularly known as Shatta Wale was adjudged African Artiste of the Year at this year’s Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

He beat competition from Ghanaian musicians, Sarkodie and R2Bees; South Africans, Uhuru, Mafikizolo, and Mi Casa; and Congolese singer Fally Ipupa to win the award.

The 9th edition of the Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA) came off at the Skirball Performing Arts Center in New York Sunday night.

Nana Asiama Hanson (Bulldog), manager of Shatta Wale, told Myjoyonline.com that prior to the awards, they were very confident of winning “considering the amount of time and work we put in this year.”

Shatta Wale, who won Artiste of the Year at this year’s Ghana Music Awards, has also been nominated for the 2014 International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA).

To make it a double on the international stage, he has to be beat off stiff competition from Daniel Bambatta Marley (Jamaica), MC Norman (Uganda), Alkaline (Jamaica), DABO (Tanzania), and Kranium (Jamaica).

The 2014 International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) will come on at the Coral Springs Centre for the Arts, South Florida on Saturday, October 4, 2014.

NEEDLESS CONFUSION AMONG MUSICIANS

Most old musicians in Ghana are referred to as BBC (Born Before Computer) and by implication, the oldies do not appreciate things concerning IT and how they can capitalise on them to improve themselves or enhance their work.

Computers and other technological devices perhaps distinguish the old from the younger generation of musicians and that impression is what I had at the back of my mind when I attended the maiden press conference of the Interim Board of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) last Thursday.

The organisation is known for its large number of elderly musicians.

But I was surprised to observe that GHAMRO was very much in touch with social media platforms and operations in the day-to-day running of the organisation.

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Linkedin and YouTube have been created for questions and suggestions and interactions, Enock Agyepong, a member of the board told the meeting.

Friday, July 11, 2014 will still remain a day that most musicians especially Nana Kwame Ampadu, and 99 other musicians in Ghana would not forget.

On that fateful day, an order of the Human Rights Division of the High Court presided over by His Lordship Kofi Essel-Mensah J. ruled that, the then executive of GHAMRO led by Carlos Sakyi, should step aside for a new five-member interim board to take over the affairs of the organisation.

The new five-member Interim Board members appointed comprised Nana Aboagye Da-Costa, a musician and traditional ruler and Chairman of the Interim Board, Kwame Nsiah Apau popularly known as Okyeame Kwame, as the PRO and Enock Agyepong, music publisher.

The other two are Dorothy Habadah, a State Attorney and representative of the Copyright Office and Kow Sessah Acquaye, a State Attorney and representative of Attorney General.

Their mandate, according to the ruling, was to take charge of the body’s affairs for the next six months before fresh elections are held.

Even though the High Court has kicked out Carlos Sakyi and his cohorts from the GHAMRO office, it appeared that the problems and divisions that bedevilled the old GHAMRO persists.

Before I proceed, let me quote what a music rights owner who pleaded anonymity told me after the rather chaotic press conference. He said, “Ignorance among many musicians is turning into arrogance that is now attaining stupidity levels. In fact, if this orchestrated insanity is not stopped, no organisation will take us serious.

“There is nothing wrong in disagreeing with each other but Ghana is polarised to the extent that it’s extremely difficult for people to make meaningful arguments without unnecessary digression or make sense without showing their divisive nature. Ghana is divided to the extent that almost everything is politicised.

“Apportioning of blame is the order of the day. Everything is about the two political opponents; nothing good comes out from them so far as the other party is concerned. This level of politicisation has well-eaten into every fibre of our society.”

The above summed up exactly what happened during the GHAMRO’s press conference. Instead of the occasion being used to celebrate the historic moment, it turned out to create tension and chaos rather than the purpose for which it was organised.

At the event, a great chunk of the country’s older musicians showed their disregard for the rule of law when they openly lambasted a court ruling, created chaos and nuisance.

It was just shameful to see musicians who should know better exchange unprintable words and point fingers at the people the court had put in place to steer the affairs in their interest.

Had it not been the kind nature of the Interim Board members, who kept their calm in the face of attacks and insults, perhaps what would have happened would have been very shameful and an indictment the music industry.

Until last Thursday’s chaotic press conference, the five-member had been working to ensure that they met their deadlines and also follow the directives of the court ruling.

When the invitation was sent out to invite people to the press conference, the impression was created that, it was going to be an Interim Board and media interaction but it turned out that, the invitation had also been extended to musicians, some of whom were not in support of the court ruling.

According to Ekow Micah, Akosua Agyapong and other musicians who were obviously not in support of the situation, the Interim Board did not have the right to do the work reserved for a substantive Board.

They argued that, since it was the first time the Interim Board were meeting the press, they thought the concentration should have been on when and how fresh elections would be held. According to them, any other agendas apart from the one concerning elections were a waste of time.

One may ask: couldn’t they have waited for a perfect time and a much better platform to voice out their grievances and launch their attacks? What happened was shameful.

Like Bob Marley said, “I don't stand for black man's side, I don't stand for white man's side, I stand for God's side.”

Like myself, I’m not on anyone’s side, I’m on the side that will see that things are running smoothly and transparent for all the musicians.
