BIG BROTHER THE CHASE UPDATE: SELLY GETS FIRST STRIKE FOR POURING BOOZE ON POKELLO

Ghana’s female rep in the on-going BBA The Chase, Selly on Tuesday evening received a strong warning from Big Brother after she poured a glass of wine on the head of Zimbabwean rep, Pokello with absolutely no provocation during the Channel O party on Saturday night.

Big Brother showed the uncut footage of Selly’s uncalled behavior to all the Ruby housemates to which Selly revealed in her diary room session with Biggie that her behaviour was not meant to provoke the Zimbabwean. She said, “I poured alcohol over Pokello’s head to show her that she was really dancing well. I didn’t do it to provoke her because we get along. I realized later that she didn’t find it amusing. We have spoken about it and I have apologised”, she said.

Selly went on to reveal how she does the same in Ghana when her friends excel on the dance floor. Biggie threatened to disqualify the Ghanaian housemate if she did not adhere to the laws of the game.

GHANA’S FIRST NATIONAL CARNIVAL TO HIT ACCRA ON JUNE 29

The Ghana Centre for Carnival Arts is partnering the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts to stage Ghana’s first National Carnival this June.

Carnivals, the world over, typically involve a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations.

National carnivals are held the world over and organisers say fun-lovers in Ghana must not be deprived of the excitement that comes with such events.

Paa Kwasi Kwao, Project Manager for Ghana Centre for Carnival Arts told Myjoyonline.com in an interview that the introduction of the festival was borne out of the successes chalked up by representatives from Ghana to the Luton Carnival in the UK.

According to him, his CEO, Maria Lovell’s cultural troupe has represented Ghana at the Luton Carnival in UK for some years now and the fact that the group has been “able to win the Luton Carnival for three conservative times,” is enough reason to hold one in Ghana.

Paa Kwasi Kwao said the 3-day event will kick off with a Costume Launch on Friday, June 28 at Afrikiko Gardens, followed by the main carnival on Saturday, June 29 and then an after party on June 30 at the Larbadi Beach.

Activities for the carnival includes a route march starting from the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Ring Road Central to the Osu Oxford Street where there will be cultural displays and an awards ceremony.

Events for June 29 will end at the Independence Square where there will be a food bazaar and a live concert. Artistes billed to perform at the live concert include, Bandana, Blakk Rasta, Dr Slim, and Screw Face.

The after-party at the La Pleasure Beach on June 30 will feature a rare performance by world renowned Steel Pan Band from Trinidad and Tobago.

Organisers say the carnival will centre on Ghanaian and African culture and there will be representations from all the 10 regions of Ghana. Ghanaian culture and costumes will take centre-stage at the event.

The Ghana Carnival 2013 is under the theme: Carnival, Promoting Cultural Diversity and National Cohesion and Paa Kwasi Kwao explained that it is aimed at diversifying the country’s tourism and cultural products, and highlighting Ghana’s cultural identity.

He added that the event will also seek to build a linkage between the creative arts and other sectors of the economy, and create employment and income opportunities for Ghanaians.

Apart from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Ghana Carnival 2013 is also supported by the Ghana Society and UK Centre for Carnival Arts, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Tourist Development Company, Berlin Carnival Club, Government of Trinidad and Tobago and a host of others.

‘BE SMART AND GET PROTECTED’ - LOUSIKA ADVICES WOMEN

Nearly 25% of maternal deaths in Ghana are caused by backstreet abortions even though abortions are legal under specified conditions like rape, incest or psychological distress.

Ghana therefore remains off-target for achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals with over 4,000 women dying each year from giving birth through various complications and a further 200,000 being maimed or disabled from the same complications.

In view of this, Christelle Akua Sika Amankona, popularly known as Lousika has joined up with the Maternal Health Channel to send special messages to Ghanaians, especially young women and the youth to help reduce maternal deaths and promote improved health care services for all.

The Maternal Health Channel (MHC) is produced by Creative Storm Networks and shows on GTV on Thursdays at 8pm and on TV3 Fridays at 8.30pm. The multi- media project is also broadcast on several radio stations, Joy 99.7fm and Radio XYZ 93.1 Over the last few months, MHC has broadened the national health debate and got people talking about critical health issues. That is where Lousika’s popularity and powerful creative energy becomes significant.

“LOUSIKA is passionate about promoting maternal health and this passion compels me to take a stand and help raise awareness about this issue”, she said. On unwanted pregnancies, Lousika’s slogan is ‘Be smart and get protected!’ Being smart means seeking information on the right contraception for you, not being discouraged or bamboozled by anyone and getting protected. “If you want to abstain from sex, cool otherwise be smart, get protected”

Lousika is currently in the studio working on a new version of "Take Over", her popular hit song for the maternal health campaign. She encourages young people to "Take Over" the decisions that affect their reproductive health, BE SMART and GET PROTECTED.

I'M NOT TURNING BACK - LORD KENYA

Rap heavyweight champion, Lord Kenya, now Evangelist Lord Kenya, has been telling his fans, especially those who repeatedly call to engage him because of his popular songs, to forget about him returning to the old worldly ways because “there’s no turning back”.

“God is using me for greater things”, he said.

According to Lord Kenya, he had a huge following until three years ago when he became born-again but most of them have turned their backs on him simply because he gave his life to God.

“Can you imagine a whole Lord Kenya who was making waves with songs like Sika Baa, Born Again, Sika Mpo Nfaneho, now drops a nice gospel album Christ Life which boasts of 10 good tracks and not many people are ecxited?

“It is unfortunate my fans don’t want to accept it but I am not worried because church members are patronising the songs and I’m happy with that”, the still good-looking clean-shaven artiste told Showbiz last Monday.

The born-again hit-maker said that he is not going back to the world to please his fans or anyone for that matter.

“God is using me for greater things. I have the gift to heal people, prophesy and do so many things through Him who strengthens me. I cannot therefore go back to the world when I have seen the light”, he said

However, Evangelist Lord Kenya expressed the wish that his fans remained loyal and listen to the songs and see whether the messages have something for their lives. “I expect everyone who liked Lord Kenya in the past to be happy for me and support what I’m doing now”.

Lord Kenya said he received a lot of good comments during the Back In The Day Concert held in Accra last year.

“Most people were surprised to see me looking good and commended me for my transformation but they haven’t seen anything yet because the peace I have within me is greater than anyone can imagine.

He took the opportunity to advise his colleague musicians who are into drugs to desist from it. “ There is nothing like giving your life to Jesus Christ for the Bible says what will benefit a man if he gains everything in the world and loses his soul?”

He was born Abraham Philip Akpor Kojo Kenya and his desire to become a professional musician began to burn at the age of 17, just after he completed high school at Kumasi Anglican Secondary School.

Initially, Kenya met some opposition from his parents when he decided to take music as a career.

His parents had wanted him to become a lawyer instead of a musician but realising the passion in the young man, his father decided to give the lad a helping hand which led to the recording of Kenya's first single Car N'aba, recorded at Kampsite in 1998.

He joined Slip Music in the same year and released his debut album Sika Card which instantly became one of the nations hits. His fame began to spread like wildfire when he featured on Daasebre Gyamenah's immensely successful Kokooko which boasted a fantastic blend of rap and highlife music.

Kenya's long list of live performances have include Osibisa's Farewell Show, Miss Lux Universe, Ghana Music Awards Night and also alongside great African stars like Rex Omar at the Stratford Rex, London.

Lord Kenya won Hiplife Album of the Year at the Ghana Music Award 2001, Best Ghanaian Rap Music Award at the Anansekrom Festival in Canada 2000 and other awards. He turned to gospel music in 2009.
