NO BIG OR SMALL ROLES IN MOVIES – EDDIE NARTEY

Movie director Eddie Nartey says he belongs to the school of thought that believes both minor and major casts work together to make a good movie, and therefore no role is more important than the other.

According to the actor-turned-movie-director, every role is essential in the making of a movie, irrespective of whether it is a major or minor character.

Roles, he said, complement each other, explaining that if Majid Michel plays a lead in a movie without extras to support him, it won’t make sense to viewers.

“There is nothing like big or small roles. Every role in a movie is essential. Even the role of extras in the movie…without them, the movie wouldn’t be what it should. Every character in a movie contributes greatly to the story and the movie as whole. Let me give you an example: If we have Majid Michel playing the major character, what we refer to as the “big role”, and he goes to the market to purchase something. If in that scene we don’t have a lot of extras to depict a market scene, how would the audience accept that scene as a market place when we all know what markets are?

“Take the movie Expendables for instance; a lot of the big actors played as cameo in the movie and those roles were very significant. Indeed there is no small or big role in a movie,” Eddie told News-One on Saturday.

Veteran actor, David Dontoh raised the issue about big and small roles a couple of weeks ago.

“We don’t have small roles and big roles. We actually have small actors and big actors because an actor takes a small role and makes it the biggest, depending upon the story. And so I don’t discriminate in the size of the role I play in a movie, except if it is not challenging enough for me. I will normally like to go in for challenging roles,” he said.

WHY I'M NOT GETTING MOVIE ROLES - ACTRESS HELEN ASANTE

Big things, they say, come in small packages and this couldn’t be a more apt description of petite actress Helen Asante, but, be that as it may, Helen says that her size may be more of a liability than an asset, considering the fact that she keeps getting overlooked for movie roles because of her small stature.

Speaking to Showbiz last weekend, Helen said while film producers and directors all over the world would cast people who had talent, no matter what they looked like, their Ghanaian counterparts insisted on only using people who had a certain look – they all have to be tall, pretty etc.

“They are intimated by my size but I think it really doesn’t matter how you look. With film if you’re a good director and you know what you want from an actor, you can get what you want using make up and costume,” she said.

“There are shorter and uglier people all over the world whose talents are being exploited but that doesn’t happen in this country.”

Helen said she initially didn’t realize her size was a problem when she wasn't getting roles in movies.

According to her, she once heard a producer wanted to cast her in a role but the film director turned her down because he thought she was too “small” to play the role.

“In the beginning I wasn’t getting the whole thing and didn’t understand what was going on but it really hurt me. And way back, I wouldn’t be called for movies and all that not because I wasn't good but because I wasn’t big,” she complained.

But she said, that doesn’t discourage her anymore because she knows her worth and what she is capable of doing. Physically she may be short/small but as any supremely gifted person endeavors to do, she is determined to showcase her God-given talents for the whole world to see.

“I don’t react because I know what I have and I see it as their loss. They are the ones going to lose because a time will come when they’ll need me more than I need them. A time will come that they’ll want me and I won’t be available,” Helen Asante said.

Besides, she believes her small stature would inure to her benefit one day. “The big and tall people would eventually all grow old and I would still be looking pretty and sexy,” she added.

Known for movies such as Somewhere in Africa, Crime to Christ, About To Wed, In The Eyes Of My Husband, to mention but a few, Helen said though she still gets scripts in spite of everything, she doesn’t accept most of the ones that come her way because some of the stories are not challenging enough and also because of poor pay.

Helen, who’s been in the movie industry for almost a decade was born into a family of six and hails from Kyebi in the Easter Region.

She started her education at Snaps Nursery School at Asylum Down, then to Sunset Preparatory School and the Adonai Institution of Radio and TV presentation, where she undertook a six-month course in 2005.

She subsequently enrolled at the Zenith College, where she graduated with a certificate in tourism and hospitality management. Apart from acting, she develops story ideas and writes for producers.

In her final words to her fans, she said she’s got a lot lined up for this year so they should be on the lookout for her.

“Tell my fans not to allow anyone to look down on them and that they should believe in themselves,” she said.

Pretty Eazzy claims that after her break up there have been so many men knocking at her door but she was not giving anyone attention as she wanted to focus on her career.

HELP PUSH GHANAIAN COMEDIANS OR ELSE THERE WILL BE NO FUTURE - FRITZ BAFFOUR APPEALS

One of Ghana's pioneer comedians and Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Fritz Baffour has called for a concerted effort to help push the Ghanaian to the top.

The MP had said in an interview with Channel R last week that, “I’m not too enthused about Ghanaian comedy. When we started comedy in the past with people like KSM and Tommy Annan Forson, we gave out deep comedy. Now the industry is bad! Investment in comedy is poor, so basically, I’m not enthused about comedy in Ghana now.”

Speaking as a guest on Rhythmz A-Z on Joy FM Saturday, Fritz lamented that the fortunes of the Ghanaian industry has dwindled drastically and called for support for up-and-coming comedians to sustain it.

"It's not as good as I thought it should be. The way we started and I thought more people will come on board and that there will a great response from the Ghanaian people," he said.

Credited for starting standup comedy in Nigeria in the late 1980s, the MP recalled that, "When he started in 1986 with Fritz & Friends with Tommy Annan Forson, it was a pioneering thing because that kind of comedy thing had not been seen in Ghana for quite a long time," although he will not take full credit for starting comedy in Ghana.

He gave credit to the likes of JB Danquah's son, Paul Danquah and BT Kingsley Hayford for laying the foundation for Ghanaian comedy in the 1960s.

His hit comedy series, Fritz & Friends, was aimed at mentoring people who wanted to do comedy but there was no support in terms of sponsorship, Fritz lamented.

According to him, during the Charter House comedy series "we had our guys but they put on the backburner and that was it. If you don't encourage them, if you don't interact with them, if you don't give them the chance to perform, to polish their routine then you are in trouble."

Ghanaian comedians, the veteran lamented, came in as openers for the big Nigerian stars and that was it. "Young men like comedian David Aglah, I see him, a wonderful young man but I feel sorry for him because he is not given the push," he said.

"When it comes to comedy, it's not about you pushing yourself, you actually need somebody to push you...if you don't have the backing and the support, then we are in trouble," Fritz stressed.

SHATTA WALE KNOWS SAMINI IS UP THERE - KKD

With the battle between dancehall artistes, Samini and Shatta Wale (Bandana) rages on, showbiz personality extraordinaire Kwasi Kyei Darkwah believes that Samini is currently the superior of the two.

Samini and Shatta Wale have over the year ruffled each other's feathers over who is the country's best dancehall act.

KKD, speaking on the heated rivalry between the two musicians on Drive Time on Joy FM with Kwabena Anokye Adisi (Bola Ray) Friday, said while he admits that the two are good, Samini "is up there".

According to him, the entertainment industry the world over thrives on such rivalries and an artiste like Jay Z, for example, sees this kind of competition "everyday".

The multiple award-winning broadcaster, arts and culture personality said Shatta Wale "accepts that Samini is up there and he wants Samini's place".

He advised Samini that in the face of such competitions, it is important that he keeps his dignity.

According to him, for every established artiste, "once you climbed up to the top, everybody wants to bring you down, but it is important to maintain your dignity."

KKD, also known as the Finest, disclosed that "there are more Samini songs that I like than Shatta Wale [songs]."

"I think Shatta Wale is hot but he has to keep his focus," he advised and urged Bandana to release songs that are pleasing to his fans.
