ARE REGGIE ROCKSTONE AND HAMMER THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO UNITE SAMINI AND SHATTA WALE?

Globally, there have been beefs since the inception of Dancehall genre where Dancehall artistes have insulted or dissed each other. And the Ghana dancehall music sector is no exception. It has witnessed its fair share of such feuds.

Currently in Ghana two Dancehall artistes Shatta Wale and Samini do not seem to see eye-to-eye. And it all started when the former accused the latter of not wishing that he ‘eats’ from his trade.

This resulted in accusations and counter accusations resulting in both artistes recording songs that attack the other.

Interestingly, the on-going dispute has assumed a new dimension and a very negative and disturbing dimension at that, after the just ended Guinness Big Eruption Concert at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The dispute was heightened prior to the show, to the extent that, fans of each of the artistes through social media platforms attacked each other using negative words.

During the show, fans of the artistes were reported to have clashed at the venue. However, the swift intervention of the security officials’ present prevented bloodshed.

Even though, no casualties were recorded on the night, I think it makes sense that whatever it is that is going on be dealt with once and for all.

No doubt, the feud has heightened after the show. Tempers have risen and words bandied about recklessly. I must say that, it has gotten to the stage where their followers are gradually getting themselves involved.

After all, Ghanaians do not want to experience the East Coast – West Coast hip hop rivalry feud that took place in the 1990s between artists and fans of East Coast hip hop and West Coast hip hop scenes in the United States. In that misunderstanding, East Coast-based rapper, The Notorious B.I.G. of Bad Boy Records and West Coast-based rapper 2Pac of Death Row Records, were both murdered by unknown assailants.

This perhaps, is what has caused the originator of Hip Life, Reggie Rockstone, to come out publicly to say he was going to intervene to settle the ongoing dispute.

A communiqué signed by music producer, Edward Nana Poku Osei, popularly known as Hammer, of ‘The Last Two’, a National Director of Hiplife with the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) gives the impression of a decision to commence series of events to address and possibly halt the ongoing unrest between the two Dancehall heavyweights.

Now to the part that I have a problem with. We can assume the two are in some kind of bickering and so there is need to help them forestall any East and West Coast experience in Ghana.

When the current MUSIGA President, Obour assumed office he made some appointments that included designations as directors of different genres of music in Ghana.

For instance, Nana Tuffour was made Director of Hi-Life Music, Rev. Yawson as Director of Gospel Music, Hammer as Director of Hiplife and Ras Appiah-Levi made the director of Reggae Music.

Shatta Wale and Samini are not Hiplife, Gospel or Highlife musicians. They are known as Dancehall artistes and Dancehall falls somewhere close to Reggae, so why is the Director of Reggae not allowed to initiate moves to find a truce between the two Dancehall contenders?

I have a problem with the Director of Hiplife leading such a crusade. What could possibly be the reason, or is he privy to something we do not know?

On the other hand, Reggie Rockstone is a respected artiste having created the hiplife genre which has seen many folks make a living and acquire properties out of, but what clout does he have in his quest to find solution to the ongoing problems between the two musicians?

Reggie recently openly declared his intention to join VIP after Promzy left the group. Reggie should have used whatever steps he has up his sleeves to resolve the feud among the VIP, but not declare publicly his intention to join them?

I do not intend to disrespect the Grandpapa of Hiplife but clearly if this is not double standard then I do not know what it is.

So I ask again, are Reggie and Hammer, the right people to handle the move for reconciliation?

I LOVE GHANAIAN GOSPEL MUSIC, I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST ITS ARTISTES - SONNIE BADU

Ghanaian-born international gospel artiste, Sonnie Badu has debunked reports that he said gospel musicians in Ghana simply do not make sense and also do not exalt God.

A News-One report suggested that the 'Baba' hit singer took a swipe at his counterparts in Ghana saying their lyrics and rhythm are simply nothing to write home about as compared to gospel musicians from Nigeria or other parts of the world.

Reacting to the story via social media site, Twitter Tuesday, Sonnie Badu, who headlined this year's 'Africa Worships With Sonnie Badu' concert at the Accra Sports Stadium Saturday night said, the report is false.

"It's been drawn to our attention that there is a news circulation that I said This and that about Ghanaian gospel artist .. Well first of all I am a big fan of Ghana gospel music and I would never say such a thing ..," he said.

The renowned gospel musician lamented that, "It's quite sad that upon the victory God gave us all on sat [Saturday], someone tries to destroy what God is doing. It [is] sad that In ur own country instead of people appreciating ur efforts they are doing all they can to destroy what God is doing."

Sonnie Badu clarified that, "Once again I am a big fan of Ghana gospel music and I will continue in my own little way to let the world know about this beautiful country."

Taking a shot at the newspaper, he said: "The sad thing is that news paper that released that false news were media partners who were paid to talk about the show .. Still I say thank you to them for all their support ..."

He observed that being in the limelight is not easy "but it's my cross and I will carry it.. Kwame Nkrumah was never appreciated by his own until he died .."

"I have had the chance to travel extensively and in other African countries they hail, love and respect their Heros.. NIGERIA for example is a country that respect those who have brought honour to their country .. I would like to advice other people to learn from that...," Sonnie advised.

He added that 'Africa Worships With Sonnie Badu' concert has thought him great lessons because "it turned out to be those you had sacrificed for them, were truly not on ur side .. Those in their days of trouble you stepped in and supported whole heartily were the same ones looking for ur down fall."

"Those you call ur brothers and sisters were the same ones than would rise against you !! But what is written is written !! And I am grateful to all of them !! May they never lack oil.. May God bless them, may they see joy ...," Sonnie Badu concluded.

“YOU SING NONSENSE”, SONNIE BADU TELLS GOSPEL MUSICIANS

NEWS-ONE has an audio recording that captures UK-based Ghanaian international gospel star, Sonnie Badu, saying the songs of some of his fellow gospel musicians in Ghana simply do not make sense and also do not exalt God.

It is not clear whether the statement was one motivated by pride, loose talk or constructive criticism but Sonnie Badu attempted to justify his condemnation of his fellow gospel singers by saying their lyrics and rhythm are simply nothing to write home about as compared to gospel musicians from Nigeria or other parts of the world.

“We Ghanaians don’t have enough confidence to come out with certain things.”

“Let us take Nigerian songs for example; they are quite straight, simple, praising and thanking God for a lot of things but sometimes you listen to certain songs and you are thinking does all songs have to talk about death and I am struggling, and I am sick, and I am ill?”

“The song doesn’t even make sense. You know…is it a normal reggae beat we have to keep it at? Sometimes you listen to the lyrics and it is about ‘yare ye ya’ (ill health is painful) and all of that, it doesn’t exalt God,” Sonnie Badu stated.

Without mentioning specific names, Sonnie Badu advised the gospel musicians he was condemning to step up their game by working on the lyrics and rhythm of their songs.

“What I would like to encourage them to do is to begin to take it easy on the lyrics and change the rhythm a bit and have more confidence in themselves…

There are awesome song writers and awesome pastors they can consult to write songs for them…they should go back to the old ones and learn,” Sonnie Badu noted.

He stated further that though there are some Ghanaian gospel singers who can make it to the international scene, their works are rather not celebrated as they ought to.

“I have done a lot of travelling and I realized that Ghanaians are great and we have awesome musicians. It is just that we the Ghanaian community need to know how to cherish our own and push them and not discourage them.

If Danny Netty does an album and it is not the hiplife sort of rhythm, apparently, that is not what the market needs.

The market needs the quick hiplife thing. But to be honest with you, those kinds of songs don’t go on the international scene.

No, they don’t. Secondly we need to make use of our tradition. We‘ve got highlife music.

We’ve got different stuff that white people are trying to learn from us.

I think we need to learn how to encourage Danny Nettey, Nii Okai, Ike Narnor; they are great guys you can put on any international platform and they would deliver for you. It is as easy as that.”

OBRAFOUR, ROCKSTONE TO BE HONOURED

Two prominent hiplife musicians, Obrafour and Reggie Rockstone, will be honoured at the second Back In The Day concert slated for December 6 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Organisers of the show, Empire Entertainment, believe the two artistes have paid their dues in the hiplife arena and deserve to be honoured.

“Obrafour and Rockstone are among the finest hiplife musicians. They have contributed a lot and we think they must be celebrated. We are not saying the others have not done their part, but these two stand out,” Empire Entertainment’s Bola Ray pointed out.

He stated that the artistes would perform for about an hour each on the night.

Obrafour on the night will perform songs such as Kwame Nkrumah, Pae Mu Ka, Yaanom, Aden, Agoro No Aso and Kokonsa.

Rockstone will also thrill the audience with songs like Eye Mo De, Keep Your Eyes On The Road, Sweetie Sweetie, Tsoo Boi, Nightlife In Accra and Agoo.

Grammy Award-winning American hiphop trio, Naughty By Nature, will also perform at the show.

The Back In The Day concert seeks to bring back to life and celebrate the great music, artistes and sound engineers of the past decade.

WANLOV ACCUSE GHANA MUSIC AWARDS OF BRIBERY

Just when Ghanaian musicians were rounding up their works for the 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), controversial rapper Wanlov the Kubolor has slapped a bribery allegation on the event’s board.

Without providing any evidence, Wanlov accused the board of the annual Ghana Music Awards of collecting bribes from musicians and favouring them against musicians who do not pay bribes.

This is one allegation organisers of the music awards have consistently denied year after year and dared anyone with evidence of bribery to put it in the public domain for investigations.

Though Wanlov did not tell NEWS-ONE which exact bribery instance he was referring to, he dared anyone who wanted to challenge him on his assertion to do so publicly.

“I was not insinuating, people pay the VGMA board each year for awards. It is something that is a reality and nobody can challenge me on that .You have to pay for the award one way or the other. It is like saying that Ghana Police take bribe and someone comes to say I’m lying. It is never possible. It is an open secret to most musicians just like everyone knows that Ghanaian politicians also take bribe,” said Wanlov.

Each year, the annual music festival sparks a lot of arguments and disagreements between organizers, the board and the musicians themselves. It seems this year’s has started quiet early.

Wanlov also recounted how he recently received a custom-made Ghanaian music award from a sculptor at the Centre for National Culture in Accra also known as the Arts Centre.

“Last week I was walking through the Arts Centre and a shop owner gave me a Ghanaian music award…the funny part is I did not have to pay for it,” Wanlov stated.

Wanlov and his lyrical twin M3nsa are currently working towards the premier of the second installment of their much anticipated ‘Cos Ov Moni’ movie.

Organizers of the show, FIESTA, say the change in venue from the Trade Fair Car Park to Obra spot is to enable music lovers from all parts of the city commute easily to the venue.

"Nkrumah Circle is the central part of the City and since we want everybody to be at the concert without any hustle, we decided to move the concert to the Obra spot. We are however promising the same level of quality entertainment from all the performers of the day. "

The One Ghana concert is a free fall concert aimed at unifying Ghanaians through music.

Show starts at 12midday.

RAWLINGS CRITICISES OVER-DRAMATIZATION IN LOCAL MOVIES

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has expressed worry about what he describes as a false representation of real issues bedeviling the Ghanaian society in local movies.

He is therefore challenging filmmakers to produce films that the public can identify with.

Former President Rawlings was speaking to Joy News after attending the premiere of Nkuli, a film based on the life of an HIV patient.

“I think what we ought to do is to be truthful to themselves, to be realistic as possible, bring things home to people. Don’t over dramatise it, don’t create undue melodrama because there is enough drama in our lives, there is enough pain in our lives.”

Former president Rawlings has therefore tasked filmmakers not to lose touch with reality in their films. He also urged television stations across the country to help put the story of Nkuli out to educate the public, “So that people can wake up to some of the realities that people go through, the violations that people would have to go through, the humiliations that people would have to go through and the consequences.

“In effect, let’s begin to humanize ourselves. The HIV issue is a test on our conscience, on our manhood.” The Deputy High Commissioner of Zambia, Chola Chama appealed to men to stop abusing women.

Meanwhile, internationally renowned evangelist, Dr Lawrence Tettey is optimistic there will be a cure for HIV soon.

The premiere of the emotional story of Nkuli, an HIV patient drew a mixed audience which included former president J.J. Rawlings and some members of the diplomatic corps.

Nkuli (The Masked) tells the story of a young girl and her two siblings, Kwame and Gye Nyame who had to face the harsh realities of life after the untimely death of their parents.

They found themselves in the care of a wicked aunt who ushered Nkuli into prostitution, as a means of generating income for the family’s upkeep - a step that led to her contracting HIV.

Ghanaian artistes who were nominated for this year’s Channel O MVAs brought home no award.

Sarkodie, D-Black, E.L, Kaakie, R2bees, J-Town, Jay So, Chase and others who were nominated for the awards lost it to the deserving winners.

Except for the Special Recognition Award, which went to Nigerian R&B duo P-Square, winners were chosen by music fans around the continent, who voted over more than two months via sms, web and WAP.

Featuring the who’s who of African entertainment and enough red carpet glamour to sweep in the holiday season with style, the longest running and most high-profile awards event on the continent made a convincing case for African music being the new frontier.

This was confirmed with an array of world-class performances from Africa’s most gifted including Cassper Nyovest featuring Okmalumkooklat, Burna Boy, The Soil, Khuli Chana, Victoria Kimani, Buffalo Souljah, Wizkid, AKA featuring Da L.E.S., KCee, Lizha James, and Mafikizolo.

Proving why they are at the top of their respective games were hosts, Naeto C and AKA who kept the energy high and the entertainment flowing on the night.

AKA also walked home with the Channel O Africa Music Video Award for Most Gifted Hip Hop Video for “Jealousy” – one of the most hotly fought genre categories on the night.

It wasn’t the only time that AKA was recognised on a night filled with high emotion.

Botswana emcee Zeus was named winner of the Most Gifted Male Video for “#DatsWasup”, which features both AKA & Tumi. Zeus’ female counterpart [Most Gifted Female Video] was Zonke with the South African songstress being rewarded for the video for her hit track “Feelings”.

Most Gifted Newcomer Video went to South African hotshot Khaya Mthethwa for “Move” while Most Gifted Duo/ Group/Featuring saw Zambian Hip-Hop outfit Zone Fam walk away with the trophy for their video “Contolola”.

The biggest category at the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards is always the Most Gifted Video of the Year which this year featured a massive 12 nominees. In the end it was Wizkid who triumphed with “Azonto”, marking yet another big moment in the career of the Nigerian star.

The genre categories are always fiercely fought and alongside AKA’s Hip-Hop win, South Africans The Soil took home Most Gifted Afro-Pop Video for the Zakwe-featuring “Inkomo”, Professor ft Oskido & Character won Most Gifted Kwaito Video for “Finger Prints” and Mafikizolo’s monster 2013 hit “Khona” saw the long-standing duo named winners of the Most Gifted Dance Video.

Most Gifted R&B Video was won by Nigeria’s Banky W for “Yes/No” while Kenya’s P Unit walked off with the award for Most Gifted Ragga Dancehall Video for their track with Collo “You Guy (Dat Dendai)”.

It wasn’t P Unit’s only win on the night: The Kenyan outfit became the only double winner when they picked up Most Gifted African East Video, also for “You Guy (Dat Dendai)”.

Special Recognition winners, P Square also proved they are still very much at the top of their considerable game by taking home Most Gifted African West Video for “Alingo”.

Last year’s Special Recognition winner, Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa once again showed an incredible gift for keeping his career fresh and hot when “Tsa Mandebele” was named winner of the Most Gifted African South Video.

NAUGHTY BY NATURE ARRIVES ON THURSDAY

Grammy Award-winning American hip-hop trio from East Orange, New Jersey, Naughty by Nature, billed to perform in Ghana on Friday December 6 at the Back In The Day Concert will arrive in Ghana on Thursday December 5.

The much hyped event which is expected to attract a large number of music fans in Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Cote D’lvoire would take place at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, Farmers’ Day December 6, at 7:00pm.

Members of Naughty By Nature, whose music has attracted a large following, have promised to leave no stone unturned in their bid to make the show grand. The group said they have a surprise Christmas package for patrons of the event.

The organizers of the event led by the Chief Executive Officer of Empire Entertainment, Bola Ray, confirmed to BEATWAVES that the American hip-hop group would perform alongside selected hiplife artistes on December 6, adding that, Naughty By Nature would arrive in Ghana this Thursday for a pre-party with Ghanaian artistes at Rockstone’s Office.

He said this year’s event promises to be different and would bring out the biggest passion of Ghanaians, which is good music.

Bola Ray disclosed that some of the local artistes billed to perform alongside Naughty By Nature include Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour, T. Blaze and T.H 4Qwages.

He stressed that the event would also create the platform for some of the biggest local artistes to perform for the enjoyment of music fans.

The group which was formed in 1989 and consists of Treach (Anthony Criss, born December 2, 1970), Vin Rock (Vincent Brown, born September 17, 1970), and the DJ Kay Gee (Keir Gist, born September 15, 1969), is one of the few hip-hop acts who were able to balance success on the pop charts with hardcore credibility.

WHO WINS GHANA MOVIE AWARDS?

The competition, lobbying and scheming among Ghanaian filmmakers ahead of this year’s Ghana Movie Awards has heightened, according to information reaching NEWS-ONE.

Though December 25 has been the usual date for the annual event, NEWS-ONE has picked some rather interesting information that the 2013 edition has been shifted to December 30, allowing more time for the nominees to lobby for votes.

Unlike previous editions where a jury was set to decide which actor or director won which award, what would happen this year is that the winners would be arrived at through a special voting system supervised by Deloitte & Touche, a multinational auditing firm of enviable repute.

“What would happen is that the actors would vote among themselves to decide who is the best actor, the actresses would do same to decide who should be the best actress, movie directors would also vote among themselves for their category, film editors would do same for their category and this is how winners for the various categories would be selected.

It is only the overall best winner that would be selected through a jury,” the source stated.

The source explained further that there would be a special voting sheet given to the various stakeholders and that after voting, the poll sheets would be forwarded to Deloitte & Touche for compilation and collation.

The overall winner still walks home with a car anyway, as well as a trip to the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Despite the annual controversies, the Ghana Movie Awards seems to be picking up year-after-year though there is still room for improvement.

Indeed, in the absence of the Ghana Movie Awards, the country cannot even boast of a ‘starting point’ towards the Oscars or other international awards.

Sarkodie may have recently released a song about women and the troubles that come with being a star but he certainly did not shy away from walking the red carpets of the 2013 Channel O Music Video Awards in South Africa ‘hand-in-hand’ with this hot girl.
Sarkodie was last weekend at the Channel O Music Video awards flashed the cameras with his gorgeous long time girlfriend Tracy.

The two were spotted walking hand in hand and also hanging out with P-Square and Wizkid.

Tracy, according our checks, is said to be the lady on the other side of the rappers life, having been with the rapper even before his life as a celebrity.

However, it is not too clear if the two are still dating like their appearance at the awards ceremony seems to suggest.

The two, Tracy in an all-yellow dress slightly slit on the left thigh with moderate jewellery to match, blended beautifully as her man Sarkodie spotted a white top with black trousers and his not-to-be missed bold Sark belt.

Sarkodie, a BET Award winner and prolific entertainer in an interview with KSM on the TGIF show, is quoted as saying he is not planning to get married soon but is contemplating having kids with a Ghanaian woman.

On June 29, this year, the ace rapper shared a photo on Instagram of him with a mysterious lady in what looked like a date-mood captioned “Will u marry me”.

Though there were speculations about the identity of the said lady, Ghlive.com can confirm that Tracy is the same woman in that picture, to whom the Sark collection owner had asked the BIG question.

Details soon.

IS JIM IYKE NOT ENJOYING A BETTER LIFE NOW,,,TB JOSHUA FINALLY OPENS UP

Pastor TB Joshua has finally lent his voice on the much-talked-about Jim Iyke deliverance that held in his church months ago.

In a recent interview with Punch, TB Joshua of SCOAN – Synagogue Church Of All Nation – cleared the air on Jim Iyke’s deliverance and other allegations that he pays people to come and fake miracles.

On Jim Iyke

Oh please, don’t drag me into that. All I can say is that if a person needs to see a doctor, he should be free to do so. I like the young man. He has been defending himself on the internet. Is he not enjoying a better life now? Are things not working for him?
On allegations he pays people to fake miracles

How much will I give to the president of a nation to come here? Even when they come, I don’t get any financial gain but I incur cost because I want to ensure that they are well cared for. That is all; I even prefer to spend my time with the poor than to be with the presidents.

If a president visits this place today, the whole of the day will be devoted to that visit, I would have lesser time for the poor people, who need my attention. God has been warning me over this trend so much that when some presidents said that they wanted to visit me, I said no.

I said it would be better for me to visit them in their countries. Each time they visit this place, I receive query from God because of my time that should have been used to attend to the poor and the needy that are waiting for me.

One soul is not superior to the other, why should I continue to receive query? Really out of three presidents that may visit, there will hardly be one that will show good example of the counsel that they received from me. If the needy are more receptive to God, it is better to give them more of my time.

BACK OFF! IAM TOO YOUNG - ACTOR TELLS LADY ADMIRERS

With his reasonably good looks and swag, young actor, Emmanuel Darko aka Cartoon, has attracted many admirers, especially young women, who regularly follow his exploits in the Afia Schwarzenegger television series.

According to the 14- year- old student of the St. John’s Grammar School in Accra, even ladies in their early 20s are constantly pestering him to date them.

“I don’t know what they want from me. I’m just a young boy lucky to be enjoying a little fame from the Afia Schwarzenegger show. I want the ladies to know that I’m too young to date them,” Cartoon told Showbiz in an interview last week.

Asked how he manages to parry the unsolicited attention he gets from women, Cartoon said there had been times when he had to be plain nasty to ward off female admirers.

“I have had to be unpleasant to some of the ladies who would not give me breathing space. I had to do that to free myself from the harassment,” Cartoon revealed.

The young actor said he often receives romantic messages on his phone and Facebook wall from lady admirers. He prefers to finish his education before getting into a relationship. “ My focus at the moment is to further my education and get a good job before paying attention to the ladies, ” Cartoon noted.

Cartoon got onto the Afia Schwarzenegger series when Delay, the programme’s creator and producer saw him perform at a Sarkodie concert and decided to feature him on her series.

He revealed that he was initially nervous about acting but has since adjusted into the role. Apart from appearing in the series, he has also appeared in a movie called Fakye.

Away from love matters, Cartoon seems not to be happy about the fact that people see him as a “too known” person. According to him, he had received several comments about him being “too known.”

“That makes me sad because whatever is shown on TV is only make believe.”

Cartoon, who placed fourth in the second Talented Kidz contest on TV3, has worked with musicians like Kobbi Rana and Guru. He is currently in studio working on some singles under his own name.

“I want to take music seriously because I love everything about music. Education is my priority but I’m keen to do music alongside,” he told Showbiz.

“MY DESTINY IS TO UNITE THE WORLD” – SHERIFA GUNU

One of Ghana’s foremost contemporary traditional music icons, Sherifa Gunu, says she lives and works for peace.

Sherifa Gunu is described by many as crowd shaker, puller and a real performer when it comes to singing and dancing. She is a princess of the royal family of Dagbon, in the Northern part of Ghana.

In a tell-all interview on Brunch in the Citi, ahead of this year’s MOGO 2013, she revealed that her destiny is to unite the world.
“I’m destined to call the whole world together for peace. My princesss’ duty is to people. Even if I don’t have that strength I know God is leading me to that point. I was born for peace and I will do anything for peace,” she revealed.

Sherifa Gunu is a Moslem, she's married to a Christian and she hopes that union would spread the message of PEACE to the rest of the world.

“Islam and Christianity is a family building thing. I don’t know why the two religions should be divided and fighting. It doesn't make sense. If you trace the ancestry of Jesus and Mohammed, you’d know they are cousins. We have to learn how to love one another and love each other… May God bring the whole world to one vision and shame satan,” she preached.

Sherifa Gunu is set to spread the love and the peace on Friday 6th December at the National Theatre when the whole nation converges to enjoy quality music of Ghanaian origin.

The MOGO concert seeks to ‘celebrate the past and inspire the future.’ Other musicians billed to perform on the night include K.K. Fosu, Okyeame Kwame, Kwaisey Pee, Awurama Badu, Samuel Owusu and the Ohia Be Ye Ya Band.

Tickets are available at Citi FM, Hotel JoeCarl in Tema and Silverbird Cinema, Accra Mall.

The Institute of Media Practice (IMP) has launched the Media and Broadcasting Awards (MaBA) at a ceremony in Accra.

The ceremony at the Silver Lounge witnessed the president of the Institute, JOT Agyeman, mentioning that the MaBA had been conceived about ten years ago.

He added that the awards would be an annual event that seeks to recognize and honour individual journalists and media organizations for excellence in specific areas of national life, including health, education, sanitation and entertainment.

He further added that the jury for the Media and Broadcasting Awards had been mandated to come up with awardees, who would be proper role models and examples of what true media practice in Ghana is.

“We will guarantee that as we hand over the baton, those who will take our place will see in us a profession worth living and dying for”, he reiterated.

Unlike other Media and Broadcasting awards, the MaBA will establish a Media and Broadcasting Hall of Fame, where exceptional media practitioners with long proven records will be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame. Also, the MaBA will award a Media and Broadcasting Student of the Year as well as the Media Entrepreneur of the Year.

JOT Agyeman expressed optimism that those who will emerge the eventual winners in the various categories will be proof that the future of the media landscape is very bright.

“I am confident that come 7th of March 2014, the names of the great and the good will leave no doubt in our minds that the future of the media landscape is very bright”, hemphasized.

The launch of the MaBA was graced by some media practitioners and some of the jury members. It was supported by the National Media Commission and its Chairman, Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere.

The awards event is being organized by the Institute of Media Practice (IMP), a research-based media institute in West Africa that offers internationally recognized research and data for organizations that require data for business. It was this institute that compiled the Ghana Television Report.
