The WHO reports that over 3.6% of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply, sanitation, and hygiene.

Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, walking miles to the nearest source, which is unprotected and likely to make them sick.

D-Black to open for Chris Brown

The Channel O award-winning Ghanabwouy aka Alhaji, D-Black, just announced that he will be opening for the American Chris Brown at his Ghana concert on the 5th of March.

The rapper and entrepreneur announced the news on his Twitter account, “Ok folks, 5th March we shuttin down the @ChrisBrown Live in Ghana Concert!! Wid ma g @1RealJoeyB & the super @djbreezy_gh #BAM! Tix out soon.”

There’s only been two acts announced so far, D-Black and R2bees.

When ChannelO.tv asked him how he got to be on the bill, he answered, “I got the hottest song in Ghana, Vera!”

Vera, is lifted off his sophomore album The Revelation, which came out in December 2012.

Why are other regions in Ghana neglected in entertainment?

Geographically there are ten regions in Ghana but when it comes to entertainment there is only one; Greater Accra Region. Entertainment is a universal phenomenon regardless of race, country, religion or tribe or geographical differences.

This brings to mind the over concentration of events and media in only one region.

Concerts, awards, movie premiers, TV and radio stations are being established in Accra making it seems the other regions have nothing to offer in terms of cash, audience and venues which is a wrong perception but even if it’s true, there is nothing stopping the government or entertainment gurus from building big capacity auditoriums in each of the regional capitals so that those outside the capital can also feel part of the entertainment circle in the country.

Lots of international acclaimed artistes such as Rick Ross, Jay z, Akon, Ludacris and P Square just to mention a few have graced the shores of Ghana in the past and will continue to but they always make a u-turn after only one show in the Dome for just a few thousands of audience, to these artists they have performed for Ghana.

This a very bad development because the organizers are myopic and if they had played on several stages across Ghana they will have satisfied more people and made more money to organize more better shows.

Award nominations also have that kind of capital city setting. The radio and TV personality Awards was filled with media people of Accra.

The question I always ask myself is if there are no good radio presenters in other regions too since those we have here came from other regions, if the likes of Abeiku Santana, Blakk Raster just to mention a few were in Kumasi and Takoradi respectively it means there are a lot of the good media personnel in other regions.

Why should talents be forced to move to Accra to be recognized, leaving other places with inexperienced ones?

Ghana DJ awards categories was also was filled with the DJs in the capital, those DJs outside the capital play the same music, they are also good with the techniques so why not at least recognize them for their good job also?

After premiering movies at the Silver Bird Cinema, producers don't premier in other regions because they feel once it has been premiered in Accra, the movie is good to go but a deep look into the Kumasi movie industry shows they are doing very well in terms of recognition and financial gains even outside the shores of Ghana.

The introduction Kumawood awards is a clear indication that they need to get recognized also for their role in the entertainment industry, it’s just a matter of time before this award break grounds. Charter House is doing a great job by extending the Nights of Thousand Laughs to Kumasi and Takoradi, this is a good initiation and step other event organizers need to follow.

All I want to put across is entertainment is a universal aspect of human life regardless of religion, belief and race, the organizers have to push one step further to cut across geographically.

We are one people and one nation.

Please was it based on the online voting & committee voting or you need to be in Accra before you can win an award?.

DJ Toffeeakwa of Angel FM had 55% while Kwesi Aboagye of Peace Fm had 9%. but the Gospel Dj went to Kwesi Aboagye(Peace Fm)

hmm, Dj Kess was on top of the Best Female Radio Dj according to your own website (www.ghanadjawards.com) but the winner went to different soul sister.

I just don't want to comment about want you guys term as over 20 DJS will be performing, Kaakie, VIP, Tic Tac, Okyeame Kwame, Yaw Siki, RNM, Chemphe Sings, Bino are the artiste on bill. The Most annoying part was Ephraim Musiq who was also part of the artiste to perform came on stage to receive an award on behalf of someone before the winner was announced.

Please explain to us what "The Best Mixed Tape DJ" means, because Smith was saying something on stage.

I heard DKB (MC) saying on stage some people are talent killers. Seriously Merqury Republic is trying to be part of the talent killers.

Ghana DJ Awards, the high & low points

After several postponement of the Ghana DJ Awards, the event which was originally slated for October 16th 2012, finally took place last weekend at the National theatre.

The awards didn’t seem well patronized due to insufficient promotion of the event coupled with the inconvenience fun and patrons faced due to incessant shifting of the date.

One would have thought the intense social media publicity of the event could do the trick, but from the way things turned out on the D-day, organizers will have to revise their notes on publicity next time.

On a night specially dedicated to award DJ’s, one would have expected to see many of the finest and famous Ghanaian DJ’s throne the venue to grace the occasion, but the story is rather turned out very disappointing when a lot of the VIP seats stayed empty throughout the show.

The likes of DJ Black, Nii Aryee Tagoe, DJ Mens and a whole lot were all missed at the event.

On the other hand, many of these very respected DJs did the exact opposite of what fans expected of them by not showing up and making unconstructive criticisms of the event.

The time factor also seemed very disappointed and nothing good to write home about. A show which was scheduled to begin at 7pm, got delayed for about 3 hours.

Also most of the fans were not happy with the award given to a few DJ’s, especially the female DJ of the year award which went to Jessica of Citi Fm, should have been awarded to DJ Kess of YFM as most stated.

Without being too hard on the organizers, The maiden edition of GHANA DJ AWARDS was fairly a good start. One hopes more effort would be put in upcoming editions.

What makes a song Ghanaian? – Jayso asks

Few days ago, rapper/producer/singer Jayso of Skillions Records took to his Twitter handle to ask some salient questions about the music industry in Ghana that have been left unanswered for a very long.

We reproduce in full (partly delivered in Pidgin English), the questions and subsequent explanations given to what was, a thought-provoking and intelligent presentation

Q: If I may ask, what makes a song Ghanaian?

Q: Dis song no go fit hit for Ghana. You dey waste your time. Ghanaians don’t have time for ‘good’ music. Dem wan dance” I ask, is this true?

Q: If I no do danceable song the DJs go bounce my track. How i go make money?” – common words uttered by many GH artists. Again I ask, True?

Q: Are we creating a fair industry? One that supports all the various art forms? One that allows creative people to express themselves?

Q: If she can’t make dance records because it is not her style. Or maybe she can’t dance to save her life. Are we saying there’s no room for her? I mean 1st off she doesn’t have any funding. Zero. Her best bet is to quit. This is the story of 1,000s of upcoming GH musicians.

Q: This isn’t about dropping names or dissing popular/mainstream material. It’s about creating room for alternative Ghanaian music. Do you know what’s even retarded? Here I am talking about alternative GH music/arts …When’s the last time u heard traditional GH music on air?

I bet many people think I’m bashing other musicians for doing dance records. If that’s your thought, wait for my upcoming dance song.

Let me tell you what ignited this. As a producer, I come across many musicians. Both popular & upcoming. I met this young lady sometime this week. She sings beautifully. She’s pretty & got so much talent. She just graduated from school & wants to do music full-time. By full-time I mean taking it as her profession. No manager. No label. Just passion. She’s submitted her songs to many media houses & the response at 1st listen is “this won’t do well in Ghana”. “DJs won’t play it” “Go back & do some danceable songs”. Now this is where it gets tricky.

Was advised not to speak on this because radio/TV folk could sabotage me. Hey, I came from little to no support.

I don’t care if my music receives zero spins. The purpose is bigger. I’ll continue to do it for those who want me to.

Is Chris Brown coming to Ghana with Rihanna?

While many have welcomed the news of Grammy Award winning act Chris Brown storming Ghana to perform at a mega concert on March 5 at the Accra Sports Stadium, fans have been left wondering and hoping if he will be coming to the country with his girlfriend Rihanna.

The two, after Chris Brown assaulted Rihanna in 2009, have patched up their differences and have been seen virtually together and at shows.

The two lovebirds arrived in Cote D’Ivoire last December 2012 for the Kora Awards where Chris Brown delivered a sizzling performance to the delight of many.

Apart from Cote D’Ivoire, Chris, born Christopher Maurice, over the past few weeks has performed in South Africa and Nigeria where he did not fail to leave an indelible showmanship.

Fans in Ghana do not want to miss out on what is expected to be a spectacular show - Hope City Launch Concert - from the man popularly known as Chris Breezy.
